New Routes:

🇨🇭 New night train service in Switzerland:

On December 15, 2025, SBB (Switzerland) started night trains between Bern, Zurich Airport and Winterthur. Trains run Friday and Saturday nights, and leave Winterthur at 1h30, arriving in Bern at 3h04. From Bern, a train leaves at 3h00, and arrives at Zurich airport at 4h16 to catch early flights, and continues on to Winterthur for an arrival time of 4h32. Other routes are also being considered.

🇱🇻 New Tallinn-Tartu-Riga line in the Baltics:

On January 12, 2026, regular service on the Tallinn-Tartu-Riga line started, with once-a-day direct trains. Tartu to Riga trains take 3h41 with tickets ranging from €19 to €22. Tallinn to Riga trips take 5h56 and cost between €29 and €32.

Other News Worth Knowing

🇩🇪 Deutschland Ticket (D-Ticket) Price Increase:

As of January 1, 2026, The D-Ticket from DB price has increased from €58 per month to €63 per month. Not valid on ICE, IC/EC trains (the high speed trains). Anyone with a German bank account can buy this ticket, regardless of residency.

🇪🇸 Spain Launches New Monthly Nationwide Transport Card:

On January 19, 2026, Spain is launching a monthly nationwide unlimited transport pass for residents only. This pass covers (initially) Renfe Cercenias, Media Distance trains, and national intercity buses. The pass excludes high-speed AVE/Avlo trains.

Cost: €60/month for adults, €30/month for under 26. The aim is to make commuting more affordable for residents.

💡 This Week’s Tip

🇮🇹 Book Italian high-speed trains 2-3 months early. Frecciarossa and Italo fares rise sharply as the date approaches, but early-bird tickets can be 60-80% cheaper.
